Let me sniff! Nosework induces positive judgment bias in pet dogs
Duranton & Horowitz (2019) found that dogs given regular nose-work sessions showed measurable reductions in physiological stress markers — including heart rate and cortisol — and significantly longer resting periods after the activity compared to dogs doing physical-only exercise. Scent-based problem-solving tires the brain in a way that mechanical movement simply cannot.

Preventive behavioral medicine for dogs: Using primary and secondary prevention concepts
Hunt, Whiteside & Prankel (2022) demonstrated that low-stimulation environments are a primary driver of chronic stress behaviors — including destructive chewing, excessive barking, and repetitive pacing. Critically, targeted enrichment schedules introduced before behaviors escalate resolve these issues at the root cause, rather than treating the symptom after the fact.

The 15-Minute Cognitive Rule
Derived from multiple canine cognitive load studies — including Bray et al. (2022) and work on problem-solving fatigue in working dog programs — the finding is consistent: 10–15 minutes of focused mental problem-solving (puzzle feeders, scent trails, training sequences) exhausts a dog psychologically as thoroughly as a 45–60 minute mechanical pavement walk. This is the biggest time-saver in enrichment science for busy owners.

Ancestry-inclusive dog genomics challenges popular breed stereotypes
Morrill et al. analyzed 18,000 dogs and found that while breed is associated with certain behavioral tendencies, it does not reliably predict individual personality. Environment and experience also play a large role.

Oxytocin-gaze positive feedback between humans and dogs
Nagasawa et al. found that mutual gaze between dogs and their owners triggered an oxytocin feedback loop in both species — the same hormonal mechanism involved in human parent-infant bonding.

Prevalence, comorbidity, and breed differences in canine anxiety in 13,700 Finnish pet dogs
This University of Helsinki study found that dogs given regular enrichment that allows them to make choices scored lower for noise sensitivity, fearfulness, and separation-related behaviors.

Evaluation of cognitive function in the Dog Aging Project: associations with baseline canine characteristics
Using Dog Aging Project data, Bray et al. found that dogs engaging in regular novel problem-solving activities maintained higher cognitive scores as they aged compared to less mentally engaged dogs.

The domestication of social cognition in dogs
Hare et al. showed that dogs, unlike wolves, spontaneously use human social cues such as pointing and gaze direction to find hidden food — suggesting domestication shaped dogs' social cognition specifically toward reading humans.

Survey of the use and outcome of confrontational and non-confrontational training methods in client-owned dogs showing undesired behaviors
Herron, Shofer & Reisner found that confrontational training techniques — such as dominance rolls and staring dogs down — were associated with increased aggressive responses. Positive approaches showed no such effect.
